  Chapter 1

Flynn Montgomery took a deep breath of the frigid air thinking he’d never smelled anything quite like it except here in Coldwater Canyon Park and Preserve. After two years in the park, it almost felt like home, he’d made some life-long friends, not to mention gaining two sisters-in-law. But it still didn’t quite feel like home; there was something missing and he was pretty sure he knew what it was. However, finding that something was going to be harder than he’d thought it would be.

With his thirtieth birthday looming in the near future, he’d decided that he’d given enough of his life to the family and that it was time to go in search of something that would make him happy for the rest of his life. He had no plans, which would drive his younger brother Owen crazy and make his older brother Jack shake his head, but he’d always found a way to land on his feet and this would be no different. Of course, the fact that he didn’t have to worry about money helped, occasionally having billions of dollars could be a nice thing.

He’d have to tell his brothers about his plans soon, but there wasn’t a huge hurry; he’d have to stay for Owen and Tabitha’s wedding as well as the birth of his new niece. That meant that he’d be spending most of the rest of the winter in Coldwater Canyon, but as he looked around him at the pristine wilderness, and took another deep breath of the mountain air, he realized that the Sierra Nevada’s were a pretty good place to spend the winter.

They’d had a rough fall, a season that was usually mild had instead produced snow storm after snow storm, almost killing his brother when he got trapped in the high pasture with the sheep. But winter had become unusually mild, and Flynn had been able to ride nearly every day, absorbing the solitude like a balm to his soul. Somehow over the last two years, he’d become the person that everyone brought their problem to. He had to admit that he had a talent for helping people, but he’d never seen himself in that role.

Now it was almost a given that if you had a problem you brought it to Flynn, who was always ready to listen and give sound advice, the only problem was that he was beginning to feel drained by the constant demands of his friends and neighbors. He’d begun taking to the hills as a way to get a few minutes to himself, and now it had become a habit, one he’d miss if he found himself in a city somewhere.

Just the thought of the city made his stomach drop, so he knew that the city, any city was out of the question. Proud that he’d made at least one decision about his future, he started down the path; it was time to get back, the sun set early in the winter and he didn’t want to be caught out after dark no matter how skilled he’d become surviving in the mountains. He was just about to turn for home when the sound of a horse approaching fast carried through the still air, it was the sound of branches breaking that really caught his attention.

Tracing the sound through the trees he moved back up the path. He could tell that the horse was moving at an incredibly fast pace, which meant one of two things: either the rider was out of control or the horse had broken free from its rider. Neither was a good thing and would involve some risk on his part either way, cursing as he tried to pin point exactly where the horse was so he could intercept it. Gauging that the horse would come out of the trees at the top of the path, he positioned himself so that he could ride alongside just long enough to grab the reigns, then waited.

It wasn’t long before the horse came crashing through the trees, snow flying in all directions, almost obscuring the rider who pulled up sharply on the reigns when she saw Flynn’s horse right in front of her. The horse stopped immediately spraying Flynn and his horse with a fine powdering of snow and ice crystals. Speechless, he could only stare at the woman on the horse, who had been riding much too fast through the forest in conditions that most would consider deadly.

Finally finding his voice, Flynn shouted, “What the hell are you doing?” Then jumped down from his horse and began brushing them both off.

When the woman only stared at him, her chocolate brown eyes full of challenge, he couldn’t help himself from launching into a lecture. “Do you have any idea how dangerous it is up here? You could have killed yourself, you could have killed me. Not to mention that the sun is about to go down and we’re miles from safety.”

The woman calmly jumped down from her horse and watched him fussing, thinking that while he looked li
ke he belonged here, his accent said different. She’d always been a sucker for an accent and Australian was at the top of her list. Growing up in Egypt had given her an appreciation for the lyrical quality of language and an accent always reminded her of her childhood home where accents from all over the world could be heard everywhere you went.

Tani looked at the man who had appeared so suddenly in the woods who was still blustering and shouting about broken legs and freezing temperatures and wanted to smile, but she knew that it would not be received well if she did. She waited until he finally wound down and let the silence of the forest settle on both of them before she finally spoke.

“Judging from your accent, you haven’t been riding these mountains all that long.” She challenged.

“Long enough to know that you don’t go crashing through the trees in six inches of fresh powder.” Flynn said, noticing that his accent had gotten stronger with his anger, something that happened from time to time when he was upset.

Tani had gotten tired of his condescending attitude, “I was perfectly in control until you appeared out of nowhere.” She said, putting her hands on her hips which wasn’t all that easy to do with all the cold weather gear she’d piled on when she left the barn that afternoon.

She hadn’t intended to ride so far when she’d set out, but the day had been perfect and she hadn’t ridden hard in weeks. When Leslie Terrell had more or less forced her to come on this vacation with them last week she’d all but refused, the prospect of spending weeks with a bunch of people she didn’t know not a pleasant one. But almost as soon as she’d arrived in Coldwater Canyon, she’d felt at home. It was strange to feel such an affinity to a place she’d never been before, but then again it was a lot like her home with the Terrell’s in Prospect Valley high in the Colorado mountains.

The truth was that she had been riding a bit fast for the conditions, but the danger of what she’d been doing had only fueled her, made her feel alive like she hadn’t for years. It wasn’t that she was unhappy with her life, what she did was very fulfilling, but at times she still missed the wide-open spaces of her home in Egypt where she could fly like the wind over the sands of the desert. It wasn’t the only thing she missed about that dry arid land, but she pushed those thoughts from her mind, wishing again that the pain of her loss would fade and instead focused on the man in front of her trying to remember if she’d met him.

Pulling the hood off her head, she shook her hair out of her eyes and focused on him, then decided that they hadn’t met, although he looked familiar. Then she made the connection, this must be one of the Montgomery brothers who’d come from Australia to raise sheep in the mountains. He had the same startling blue eyes as his brothers, but where their hair was fair, she could see the dark curls sticking out from under his hat.

Flynn heaved a big sigh, then really looked at the woman standing in front of him, although he couldn’t see much of her what he did see intrigued him. Then he noticed the horse she’d been riding, “What are you doing riding that horse? Marissa and Scott never let anyone ride him.” He demanded as if speaking to a small child.

“Not that it’s any of your business, but they asked me to ride him. I understand he can be difficult for other people to handle, but he’s been nothing but a dream for me.” Tani said, stroking the horses nose and whispering reassurances to him.

Marissa and Scott Terrell had asked for her help with the horse, appropriately named Devil, who had been impossible to ride since the moment they’d gotten him. He came from excellent blood lines, but was proving to be very difficult not only to ride but to breed, which was a shame since he had the potential to sire amazing offspring. After her very first ride, she’d know what was wrong with the horse; he simply needed to be challenged, not only physically but mentally. In short, the horse needed to be out working, something he wasn’t doing at Honey Hills where he spent most of his day in the pasture.

Flynn looked at the horse and the woman who had seemed to have charmed the beast shocked, “That horse has a reputation for throwing people, you had no business bringing him out here.”

“He just needs more challenge in his life.” Tani said annoyed, but looking at the man again she realized that he’d only been concerned for her safety. “Look, I’ll admit I might have been pushing him too hard, I appreciate your concern, but I really can handle him. It’s starting to get dark, and I’m not too thrilled with the idea of spending the night up here so I think I better go.”

Flynn looked around and realized that the sun was quickly sinking in the sky, “I suppose you’re right, spending the night up here wouldn’t be fun.” He said, wondering if she could really survive a night up here. “I’ll ride back with you. I’m Flynn Montgomery by the way.”

“I’m Tani.” She said, then mounted Devil and started down the trail.

Talk was impossible since they had to ride single file, but Flynn studied the back of Tani’s hood as they rode, wondering who she was and where she’d come from. He knew just about everyone in the park, but he’d never met this intriguing woman, who seemed to have cast a spell on Devil. When they were finally able to ride next to one another, he asked, “Is Tani short for something, it’s an unusual name.”

“Yeah it is.” Tani said, not wanting to talk about her name, which would lead to other questions she didn’t want to answer.

Flynn waited for her to say more, but she stayed silent. “You’re not going to tell me what it’s short for, are you?” He finally asked.

  “Nope.”

Flynn who was used to people opening up to him, even when he didn’t want them to, wasn’t sure exactly what to say to that, so he rode on in silence. All too soon, they reached the barn at Honey Hills and he hadn’t been able to get Tani to say more than a few words, it was both frustrating and intriguing to meet someone who didn’t want to tell him their whole life story. When they reached the barn doors, he made one last attempt to connect with Tani.

“I’d be happy to go riding with you tomorrow, I could show you some special places that only I know about.” He offered, and flashed her a big smile, something that always worked with women.

“That’s very nice of you, but I don’t think I’ll be riding tomorrow. I have some other things I need to do.” Tani declined as nicely as she could, the idea of spending the day with Flynn filling her with fear.

No matter how much she’d healed over the last few years, she still wasn’t ready for anything like even looked remotely like romance. Flynn Montgomery made her feel things that she hadn’t felt in years, things that made her feel both guilty and excited at the same time, things she had no business feeling. When she was finally ready to date again, Flynn was not the kind of man she’d envisioned herself with, he was far too handsome and sexy for her.

“Well, if you change your mind, you can reach me at the ranch. I’ll be there every day.” Flynn said, hiding his disappointment as best he could.

It gave Tani a burst of satisfaction to see that Flynn was disappointed at her refusal which she immediately felt guilty about. “I’ll remember that.” She said, then walked Devil into the barn, a small smile on her face, the man was just plain charming.

It took a few days, but the memory of Tani faded from his mind. He was busy with wedding preparations for his brother, as well as thoughts of when and how he would tell his brothers that he was leaving in the spring. They all knew that it was coming but no one wanted to talk about it, especially Owen who still resisted change as he always had, but with the wedding only a week away it was time for him to tell them about his plans.

He’d already planned to move out of the cabin that he and Owen shared. That would be the first step in his plan, then it would be easier when the day came for him to leave Coldwater Canyon. The perfect time to talk to his brothers about leaving came unexpectedly the very next night when they were all sitting around going over last-minute wedding plans. Tabitha looked exhausted and he knew that even though she’d stopped working so much, livin
g above her restaurant wasn’t letting her get much rest and with only a few months to go before the birth of his niece she needed her rest.

When they’d gone over everything Owen had on his list, Flynn cleared his throat and said, “I think it’s time I moved out of the cabin and let you two have it.”

“But we’re fine here.” Tabitha objected as he knew she would. “Where will you go?”

“You’re not fine here. You’re working too much.” Flynn said, pointedly.

“I couldn’t agree more.” Owen chimed in.

“But with all the guests in the park there can’t be anywhere decent for you to stay. I’m not letting you sleep on someone’s couch.” Tabitha said, stubbornly.

Flynn held up his hand, “Stop worrying, Chloe’s going to let me stay in the apartment at the clinic. The animals won’t bother me and it’s a nice little place, so it’s all settled.”

“Well okay, that doesn’t sound so bad, but you know you really don’t have to.” Tabitha said, still feeling a little guilty. “It won’t be that long before the house is done.”

“No, this needs to happen, which brings me to my next piece of news.” Flynn said, taking a deep breath. “When spring comes I’m going to leave. Get out and see some more of the country.”

“Leave? Where are you going?” Owen was just as upset as Flynn had known he’d be.

“Honestly I’m not sure. I don’t really have any plans. I’ll just get in the truck and see where I end up.” Flynn said, bracing himself for the backlash that was sure to come.

There was a long silence, he could see Tabitha grab Owen’s hand under the table, and Jack turning over his announcement in his mind. “Well that should be quite an adventure. Which way are you going to head?” Jack finally seemed to come to the decision that Flynn was making the right decision. He’d been watching his brother for a while, seeing him grow up and recognizing that his life wasn’t going to be here in the park with them.

Owen shot his brother a dirty look but remained silent, “I don’t know for sure yet, but I’ve got several months to decide.” Flynn said, relieved that his brothers weren’t making a big deal about his leaving, but also a little sad.
